"PT Freeport Indonesia" accelerated the preparation of the construction of a mine smelter and processing facility in Gresik, East Java. Smelter which operates in 2023 is the largest copper processing site in the world, "said PT Freeport Indonesia Vice President Corporate Communication Riza Pratama.

Riza said the construction of a smelter in Gresik had been carried out in a location that was once a swampland so it had to be compacted so that the smelter's position does not shift when natural disasters such as earthquakes.
"The smelter's operational target is fully in 2023 and has a processing capacity of 2 million tons of copper concentrate per year," he said.
Riza said the PT-FI smelter, which was built at the Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (IIIPE) Gresik, was estimated to require the US $ 3 billion. The location in Gresik was chosen as the location of the smelter construction because there is a cement factory that can utilize the results of sulfuric acid processing, silver, and gypsum.
"The Freeport smelter was built in Gresik because it can be used by a cement factory to manage sulfuric acid," said Riza.

Related to the construction of a smelter of a mining company, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan previously also requested the construction of a smelter by a nickel company in the Sorong Special Economic Zone (KEK), West Papua, to be accelerated.

"Three years ago I encouraged Antam to make a smelter here. But, I do not understand why it is canceled. I will continue to push this Smelter. I will force this into reality because they promised, "he said.
Luhut stressed this during his work visit to the Sorong SEZ, West Papua, Thursday (27/2). He visited three points in, Sorong KEK, namely the Sorong KEK Canal, the Sorong KEK Port, and the Sorong KEK Administrator's Office. He also asked nickel companies that occupy the Sorong KEK area to also make derivative products, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, to lithium batteries.
