The production volume of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Papua's Grasberg mine has the potential to shrink. Freeport's copper concentrate production this year is predicted to decline by 43 percent from last year's production of 2.1 million tons. The decline occurred because there was an operational transition from open pit to underground mining. As a result, export activities fell.
Director of Mineral, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yunus Saefulhak said that Freeport Indonesia's copper concentrate production this year had the potential to drop 43% or only 1.2 million tons. Of that amount, a total of 1 million tons will be used to meet the processing capacity at PT Smelting Gresik, while the remaining 200,000 tons will be exported.
"Production is lower, because there is an operational transition from open pit mining to underground mining," Yunus said in a presentation on the performance of minerals and coal (mineral) in 2018 which took place at the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal.
The average volume of Freeport Indonesia's concentrate production reaches 270,000 tons per day, reaching 2.1 million tons throughout 2018. Of this production, 1.2 million tons are exported and 800,000 tons are supplied to PT Smelting Gresik.

Yunus said, the transition occurred because the production at the open pit had declined, while the underground mine had not been able to cover the decline in production in open pit during the years 2019-2020. Freeport Indonesia must first prepare the infrastructure and production readiness on the underground mine.
"There are processes that must be passed, building infrastructure, roads and all kinds," he said.
The ESDM Ministry's Director General of Mineral and Coal (Director General of Mineral and Coal), Bambang Gatot Ariyono said, the effect of the decline in production resulted in reduced state revenues from Freeport Indonesia. Although he did not mention the details, Bambang said that state revenues would increase again after 2020.
"Up because I moved to the underground mine," he said.

Produksi Konsentrat Freeport Turun 43%
