Smelting Guarantees Copper Concentrate Supply

Freeport Production Down
PT Smelting is optimistic that the supply of copper concentrate to the smelter in Gersik will not go down even though PT Freeport Indonesia's mining production will decrease dramatically this year. PT Smelting General Affair Manager Sapto Hadi said that so far the raw material in the form of copper concentrate was supplied by Freeport Indonesia from the Grasberg mine in Papua.

Freeport Indonesia's copper ore production is expected to drop dramatically starting this year due to the transition process from open-pit mining to underground mining. He stressed that Freeport Indonesia had committed to continue optimizing the supply of concentrates to the smelter owned by PT Smelting located in Gresik, East Java.

This means that Freeport Indonesia will cut the volume of copper concentrate exports rather than reduce supply for domestic needs.
"So, the decline in the Freeport mine production will not affect the production of Smelting," he said on Monday (11/2).
Freeport Indonesia's supply of copper concentrate this year is estimated at 1.1 million tons. The supply will produce 291,000 tons of the main copper cathode product with a purity rate of 99.99% and byproducts or waste from refining 1.04 million tons of sulfuric acid and about 805,000 tons of copper slag.
"With such production projections, Smelting can still maintain its commitment to meet the supply of copper cathodes to its customers, both domestically and abroad, "he said.
Sapto continued, his party was still able to maintain a commitment to support the government's food security program through the supply of sulfuric acid to the fertilizer factory of PT Petrokimia Gresik. In addition, the cement, concrete and shipyard industries that require copper slags will continue to receive supplies.
Smelting copper cathode production in 2018 totaled 242,000 tons, sulfuric acid as much as 755,000 tons, and copper slag as much as 580,000 tons.
Sapto explained that the production was lower than usual. The reason, last year's smelter production operations had been temporarily stopped. On the same occasion, Sapto revealed that PT Smelting Senior Director Prihadi Santoso had resigned since the end of 2018.
"Pak Prihadi Santoso has resigned from PT Smelting since November 17, 2018," he said.
According to Sapto, the reason Prihadi resigned was because of family pressure because he was 71 years old. Prihadi Santoso was mentioned in the trial of gratification cases that happened to former Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission VII Eni Maulani Saragih. He was named one of the gratuities related to copper slag imports.
Sapto emphasized that the import of copper slag had nothing to do with PT Smelting. Because, PT Smelting has become a copper slag producer. So far, PT Smelting also has no plans to import the raw material for cement substitute for iron sand.
"So, PT Smelting has no interest in importing copper slags," the pimgkas.
REACH IN 2020
Freeport Indonesia's copper concentrate production and export is expected to start rising in 2020 and reach its peak in 2025 after it is predicted to fall this year. Freeport's concentrate production in 2019 is projected to decline due to the transition from open pit to underground mining.
Bambang Gatot Ariyono said that the decline in copper concentrate production this year was unavoidable as the process of transitioning from the Grasberg open pit to underground mines. Because, so far the biggest production is still produced from open pit mines in Mimika, Papua.
According to him, a decline in production will have an impact on Freeport's pre-tax income (EBITDA). However, he stressed that this was a normal process and was not related to backup problems. Bambang said, both the production and financial performance of Freeport Indonesia will begin to rise again in 2020. The optimal point is expected to occur in 2025 and will tend to be stable afterwards.

PT Smelting optimistis suplai konsentrat tembaga ke smelter di Gersik tidak akan turun kendati produksi tambang PT Freeport Indonesia akan berkurang drastis pada tahun ini. Manager General Affair PT Smelting Sapto Hadi mengatakan bahwa selama ini bahan baku berupa konsentrat tembaga dipasok oleh Freeport Indonesia dari tambang Grasberg di Papua.
Produksi bijih tembaga Freeport Indonesia diperkirakan turun drastis mulai tahun ini karena proses peralihan dari tambang terbuka ke tambang bawah tanah. Dia menegaskan bahwa Freeport Indonesia telah berkomitmen untuk tetap mengoptimalkan pasokan konsentrat ke smelter milik PT Smelting yang berlokasi di Gresik, Jawa Timur.
Artinya, Freeport Indonesia akan memangkas volume ekspor konsentrat tembaga daripada mengurangi pasokan untuk kebutuhan dalam negeri.
“Jadi, penurunan produksi tambang Freeport ini tak akan berpengaruh terhadap produksi Smelting,” katanya, Senin (11/2).
Pasokan konsentrat tembaga Freeport Indonesia pada tahun ini diperkirakan sebanyak 1,1 juta ton. Pasokan tersebut akan menghasilkan 291.000 ton produk utama katoda tembaga dengan tingkat kemurnian 99,99% dan produksi sampingan atau sisa dari pemurnian sebanyak 1,04 juta ton sulphuric acid (asam sulfat) dan sekitar 805.000 ton terak tembaga (copper slag).
“Dengan proyeksi produksi seperti itu, Smelting masih tetap bisa menjaga komitmen untuk memenuhi pasokan katoda tembaga ke pelanggannya, baik di dalam negeri maupun luar negeri,” tuturnya.
Sapto melanjutkan, pihaknya juga tetap mampu menjaga komitmen untuk mendukung program ketahanan pangan pemerintah melalui pasokan asam sulfat ke pabrik pupuk PT Petrokimia Gresik.
Selain itu, industri semen, beton, dan galangan kapal yang memerlukan slag tembaga akan tetap mendapat pasokan. Produksi katoda tembaga Smelting pada 2018 sebanyak 242.000 ton, asam sulfat sebanyak 755.000 ton, dan terak tembaga sebanyak 580.000 ton.
Sapto menjelaskan bahwa produksi tersebut lebih rendah dari biasanya. Alasannya, operasi produksi smelter pada tahun lalu sempat terhenti sementara. Dalam kesempatan yang sama, Sapto mengungkapkan bahwa Direktur Senior PT Smelting Prihadi Santoso sudah mengundurkan diri sejak akhir 2018.
“Pak Prihadi Santoso telah mundur dari PT Smelting sejak 17 November 2018,” katanya.
Menurut Sapto, alasan Prihadi mengundurkan diri karena desakan keluarga karena usianya yang sudah 71 tahun. Prihadi Santoso sempat disebut-sebut dalam persidangan kasus gratifikasi yang menimpa mantan Wakil Ketua Komisi VII DPR Eni Maulani Saragih. Dia disebut sebagai salah satu pemberi gratifikasi terkait dengan impor terak tembaga.
Sapto menegaskan bahwa impor terak tembaga tidak ada kaitannya sama sekali dengan PT Smelting. Pasalnya, PT Smelting sudah menjadi produsen terak tembaga. Selama ini, PT Smelting juga tidak memiliki rencana untuk mengimpor bahan baku semen pengganti pasir besi tersebut.
“Jadi, PT Smelting tidak punya kepentingan terhadap impor copper slag,” pimgkasnya.
TERCAPAI PADA 2020
Produksi dan ekspor konsentrat tembaga Freeport Indonesia diperkirakan akan mulai naik pada 2020 dan mencapai puncaknya pada 2025 setelah diprediksi anjlok pada tahun ini. Produksi konsentrat Freeport pada 2019 diproyeksi turun karena masa transisi dari tambang terbuka ke tambang bawah tanah.
Bambang Gatot Ariyono mengatakan, penurunan produksi konsentrat tembaga pada tahun ini tidak terhindarkan seiring dengan proses transisi dari tambang terbuka Grasberg ke tambang bawah tanah. Pasalnya, selama ini produksi terbesar masih dihasilkan dari tambang terbuka di Mimika, Papua.
Menurutnya, penurunan produksi akan berdampak pada pendapatan dan pendapatan sebelum pajak (EBITDA) Freeport. Namun, dia menegaskan bahwa hal tersebut merupakan proses yang normal dan tidak terkait dengan masalah cadangan.
Bambang menuturkan, baik kinerja produksi maupun keuangan Freeport Indonesia akan mulai naik kembali pada 2020. Titik optimal diperkirakan terjadi pada 2025 dan akan cenderung stabil setelahnya.
