Freeport Underground Mining Production Reaches 210 Thousand Tons of Ore / Day

The PT Freeport Indonesia underground mine is projected to produce ore up to 210 thousand tons per day starting in 2023. Going forward, Freeport will indeed rely on its underground mine. Freeport McMoRan Chief Executive Officer Richard Adkerson said, his party focused on pursuing sustainable mining production at Freeport Indonesia, namely by switching to underground mines.

The Freeport Indonesia open pit is projected to be finished mined this year. Going forward, Freeport Indonesia will rely on its underground mine, the Grassberg Block Cave and Deep MLZ. Grassberg Block Cave ore production is planned to increase twice as much to 130 thousand tons per day starting in 2023. While Deep MLZ is projected to produce ore up to 80 thousand tons per day from 2022, from initially 27 thousand tons per day.

"So we are on schedule to achieve sustainable volumes from our mines, to supply our processing to more than 200 thousand tons per day. This is a remarkable achievement in terms of large-scale underground mining, "he said in a conference call for the first quarter of 2019, recently.

He explained, at the end of this year, his party would start mining activities at the Grassberg Block Cave. In this first quarter, his party already managed to open 10 drawbells. 

    For Deep MLZ, the company has successfully carried out 14 holes of hydro fracking. In addition, the cave area will also be opened westward from the current entrance. This will speed up the hydraulic radius.

"By doing this, we are on track to pursue the target of increasing production to achieve production targets. Everything is going well, "said Adkerson.

Furthermore, in its first quarter performance release, Freeport McMoran stated that Freeport Indonesia's capital expenditure for this underground mine averaged US $ 700 million per year in the next four years, apart from the contribution of PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Persero). However, considering the construction of this underground mine is a long-term project, the realization of the costs will vary. 

Based on Freeport Mc-MoRan data, this year, Freeport Indonesia's ore production is targeted at 114 thousand tons per day. This production comes from most of the Grasberg Open Pit and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ), a small portion of Big Gossan, Deep MLZ and Grasberg Block Cave.

Then starting in 2020, there will be no more ore production from the Grasberg Open Pit, but entirely from underground mining. Ore production also fell to 100 thousand tons per day from DOZ, Grasberg Block Cave, Deep MLZ and Big Gossan. 

     In 2021, ore production from Deep MLZ and Grasberg Block Cave began to increase to 59 thousand tons per day and 64 thousand tons per day, while the total production was 162 thousand tons per day. On the other hand, ore production from DOZ began to decline.

Furthermore, in 2023, Freeport's ore production will rely on Deep MLZ 80 thousand tons per day and Grasberg Block Cave 130 thousand tons per day, and a small portion of Big Gossan. The total ore production at that time was targeted to reach 217 thousand tons per day.

Export Quota

Although ore production from open-pit mining, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Ofiicer Kathleen Quirk added, the company is also seeking to make ore production from open-pit mining higher. This will be correlated with the magnitude of Freeport Indonesia's concentrate export quota.

"We have a higher estimate of the initial (production) figure, but we will need a revision for our export quota," he said.

According to him, the export quota currently obtained by Freeport Indonesia is based on the plan that we submitted to the government at the end of last year. However, it is optimistic that it can produce more than the quota set this year. 

     Although, the additional quota is indeed not too significant. It only wants to get certainty of space for exports because there is a possibility that production from open pit can be higher than projected.

"I think about 40 thousand tons of concentrate. This is indeed not significant when compared to the capacity of our smelter, "he said.

Previously, the government had set an export quota of 198,282 tons. This amount is far lower than that the previous year's quota reached 1.25 million tons of concentrate. Because the production of PTFI is expected to drop dramatically this year along with the transition from the mining process from open pit mining to underground mining.

Produksi Tambang Bawah Tanah Freeport Capai 210 Ribu Ton Bijih/Hari

Tambang bawah tanah PT Freeport Indonesia diproyeksikan akan memproduksi bijih hingga 210 ribu ton per hari mulai 2023. Ke depannya, Freeport memang akan mengandalkan tambang bawah tanahnya. Chief Executive OfFicer Freeport McMoRan Richard Adkerson mengatakan, pihaknya fokus mengejar produksi tambang yang berkelanjutan di Freeport Indonesia, yakni dengan beralih ke tambang bawah tanah.

Tambang terbuka Freeport Indonesia diproyeksikan akan selesai ditambang pada tahun ini. Ke depannya, Freeport Indonesia akan mengandalkan tambang bawah tanahnya, yakni Grassberg Block Cave dan Deep MLZ. Produksi bijih dari Grassberg Block Cave direncanakan akan naik dua kali lebih banyak hingga menjadi 130 ribu ton per hari mulai 2023. Sementara Deep MLZ diproyeksikan akan menghasilkan bijih hingga 80 ribu ton per hari mulai 2022, dari awalnya 27 ribu ton per hari.

“jadi kami sesuai jadwal dalam mencapai volume yang berkesinambungan dari tambang kami, untuk memasok pengolahan kami sampai lebih dari 200 ribu ton per hari. Ini pencapaian yang luar biasa dalam hal tambang bawah tanah skala besar,” kata dia dalam conference call kuartal I-2019, belum lama ini.

Dia menjelaskan, di akhir tahun ini, pihaknya sudah akan memulai kegiatan tambang di Grassberg Block Cave. Di kuartal pertama ini, pihaknya sudah berhasil membuka 10 drawbell. Untuk Deep MLZ, pihaknya telah berhasil melakukan hydro fracking 14 lubang. Selain itu, juga akan dibuka area gua ke arah barat dari pintu masuk saat ini. Ini akan mempercepat radius hydraulic.

“Dengan melakukan ini, kami on track untuk mengejar target peningkatan produksi untuk mencapai target produksi. Semua berjalan dengan baik,” kata Adkerson.

Selanjutnya, dalam rilis kinerja kuartal pertamanya, Freeport McMoran menyatakan bahwa belanja modal Freeport Indonesia untuk tambang bawah tanah ini rata-rata US$ 700 juta per tahun dalam empat tahun ke depan, di luar kontribusi PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero). Namun, mengingat pengerjaan tambang bawah tanah ini adalah proyekjangka panjang, maka realisasi biayanya akan bervariasi. 

     Berdasarkan data Freeport Mc-MoRan, pada tahun ini, produksi bijih Freeport Indonesia ditargetkan sebesar 114 ribu ton per hari. Produksi ini berasal dari sebagian besar dari Grasberg Open Pit dan Deep Ore Zone (DOZ), sebagian kecil dari Big Gossan, Deep MLZ dan Grasberg Block Cave.

Selanjutnya mulai 2020, tidak ada lagi produksi bijih dari Grasberg Open Pit, melainkan seluruhnya dari tambang bawah tanah. Produksi bijih juga turun menjadi 100 ribu ton per hari yang berasal dari DOZ, Grasberg Block Cave, Deep MLZ, dan Big Gossan. 

     Di 2021, produksi bijih dari Deep MLZ dan Grasberg Block Cave mulai naik menjadi masing-masing 59 ribu ton per hari dan 64 ribu ton per hari, sementara total produksi 162 ribu ton per hari. Di sisi lain, produksi bijih dari DOZ mulai menurun. 

Selanjutnya di 2023, produksi bijih Freeport akan mengandalkan Deep MLZ 80 ribu ton per hari dan Grasberg Block Cave 130 ribu ton per hari, dan sebagian kecil dari Big Gossan. Total produksi bijih pada saat itu ditargetkan mencapia 217 ribu ton per hari.

Kuota Ekspor

Meski produksi bijih dari tambang terbuka, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Ofiicer Kathleen Quirk menambahkan, pihaknya juga sedang mengupayakan agar produksi bijih dari tambang terbuka bisa lebih tinggi. Hal ini akan berkorelasi pada besaran kuota ekspor konsentrat Freeport Indonesia.

“Kami memiliki perkiraan yang lebih tinggi dari angka (produksi) awal, tetapi kami akan butuh revisi untuk kuota ekspor kami,” kata dia.

Menurutnya, kuota ekspor yang saat ini diperoleh Freeport Indonesia berdasarkan rencana yang kami ajukan pada pemerintah akhir tahun lalu. Namun, pihaknya optimis bisa memproduksi lebih besar dari kuota yang ditetapkan pada tahun ini. Walaupun, tambahan kuota tersebut memang tidak terlalu signifikan.

Pihaknya hanya ingin mendapat kepastian ruang untuk ekspor karena ada kemungkinan produksi dari tambang terbuka bisa lebih tinggi dari proyeksi. 

“Saya rasa sekitar 40 ribu ton konsentrat. Ini memang tidak signitikan bila dibandingkan dengan kapasitas smelter kami,” tuturnya.

Sebelumnya, pemerintah telah menetapkan kuota ekspor konsentrat sebesar 198.282 ton. Jumlah tersebut jauh lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan kuota pada tahun sebelumnya yang mencapai 1,25 juta ton konsentrat. Pasalnya, produksi PTFI diperkirakan akan turun drastis tahun ini seiring dengan transisi proses penambangan dari tambang terbuka ke tambang bawah tanah.
