Freeport Extends the Age of the Grasberg Mine

PT Freeport Indonesia is still continuing the mining transition process from the Grasberg open pit to the underground mine. During that transition, Freeport intensively carried out the final mining activities at the Grasberg open pit. In a Freeport-McMoran report released early July 2019, they project mining in an open pit will end June 2019.

But throughout the quarter II-2019 Freeport opened additional areas to extend the life of the mine until the third quarter of 2019. The change in the mining schedule has also delayed access to high-grade ores which will be produced during the second quarter of 2019. So Freeport's copper production in the period was lower than estimated in April 2019.
"Freeport will continue to monitor geotechnical conditions to determine the level of mining in the open pit. Non-mined material will be available to be mined from the Grasberg Block Cave," according to the report.
Freeport said there was an increase in ore extraction at the Grasberg Block Cave from an average of 5,000 metric tons per day in the first quarter of 2019 to 9,000 metric tons per day in the second quarter of 2019. Freeport projects that ore production in the block will continue to increase to 15,000 metric tons per day by the end of 2019.

Freeport Memperpanjang Umur Tambang Grasberg
PT Freeport Indonesia masih melanjutkan proses transisi penambangan dari tambang terbuka (open pit) Grasberg menuju tambang bawah tanah (underground mine). Di masa peralihan itu, secara intensif Freeport melakukan aktivitas penambangan tahap akhir pada tambang terbuka Grasberg. Dalam sebuah laporan Freeport-McMoran yang dirilis awal Juli 2019, mereka memproyeksikan penambangan di tambang terbuka akan berakhir Juni 2019.
Namun sepanjang kuartal II-2019 Freeport membuka area tambahan untuk memperpanjang umur tambang hingga kuartal III-2019. Perubahan jadwal penambangan ini turut menunda akses terhadap bijih dengan kadar tinggi yang sebelumnya akan diproduksi selama kuartal II-2019. Sehingga produksi tembaga Freeport pada periode tersebut lebih rendah dari perkiraan pada April 2019.
"Freeport akan terus memantau kondisi geoteknis untuk menentukan tingkat penambangan di tambang terbuka. Bahan yang tidak ditambang akan tersedia untuk ditambang dari Grasberg Block Cave," menurut laporan itu.
Freeport menyebutkan ada peningkatan ekstraksi bijih pada Grasberg Block Cave dari rata-rata 5.000 metrik ton per hari pada kuartal I-2019 menjadi 9.000 metrik ton per hari di kuartal II-2019. Freeport memproyeksikan produksi bijih di blok tersebut akan terus meningkat hingga 15.000 metrik ton per hari pada akhir 2019.
