The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will begin evaluating the request for an increase in the export quota of PT Freeport Indonesia's copper concentrate in August 2019. Director of Mineral Exploitation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Yunus Saefulhak said, it was still waiting for an official submission from Freeport Indonesia no later than July 31, 2019. Yunus explained, the submission of the additional production quota was not a problem as long as it was carried out in accordance with the company's feasibility study. In the work plan and budget (RKAB), Freeport Indonesia's exports this year are possible to around 300,000 tons of copper concentrate.
"As long as it does not exceed the production in the feasibility study, it is OK," he said.

Previously, Freeport-McMoRan Chief Executive Officer Richard C. Adkerson said, during semester I / 2019, Freeport Indonesia still used the export quota previously agreed on, on March 8, 2019 totaling 198,282 tons of concentrate for one year. The quota dropped dramatically from the previous period which reached 1.25 million tons.
He revealed, Freeport Indonesia had requested approval from the Government of Indonesia to increase the export quota because the estimated production volume was higher than the initial plan. Regarding production, Freeport Indonesia will make production at the Grasberg Block Cave which is one of the underground mines in Grasberg as the biggest contributor after the transition from open pit mining.
Meanwhile, up to Semester I / 2019, production from Grasberg Block Cave reached 6,200 metric tons (MT) per day, up 58.9% and from 3,900 MT per day in semester I / 2018. In addition to the Grasberg Block Cave, other underground mining blocks are the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ), Deep Ore Zone, and Big Gossan with each production during semester I / 2019 totaling 7,200 MT per day, 25,700 MT per day, and 5,500 MT per day per day.
According to Adkerson, ore extraction from the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine produces the same ore body as that produced from the Grasberg open pit. Production at this mine even exceeds the target of reaching 7,400 MT of ore per day in the second quarter of 2019 and is expected to increase to 15,000 MT of ore per day until the end of 2019.
In fact, the expansion at the Grasberg Block Cave mine is expected to accelerate PTFI's production rate from an average of 30,000 MT of ore per day in 2020 to 130,000 MT of ore per day in 2023. The production target is achieved by expanding the Grasberg Block Cave to five blocks with a total area of 335,000 square meter.
"We are accessing ore about 300 meters below the surface formed by an open pit, the expansion of the mine is expected to increase production until it is expected to increase to 130,000 tons per day by 2023," Adkerson said.

Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral akan mulai mengevaluasi permohonan penambahan kuota ekspor konsentrat tembaga PT Freeport Indonesia pada Agustus 2019. Direktur Pembinaan Pengusahaan Mineral Kementerian ESDM Yunus Saefulhak mengatakan, pihaknya masih menunggu pengajuan resmi dari Freeport Indonesia paling lambat 31 Juli 2019. Setelah itu, evaluasi bisa dilakukan.
Yunus menjelaskan, pengajuan tambahan kuota produksi tersebut tidak menjadi masalah selama dilakukan sesuai dengan studi kelayakan perusahaan. Dalam rencana kerja dan anggaran biaya (RKAB), ekspor Freeport Indonesia tahun ini dimungkinkan hingga sekitar 300.000 ton konsentrat tembaga.
“Selama tidak melebihi produksi yang ada di studi kelayakankan boleh-boleh saja,” katanya.
Sebelumnya, Chief Executive Officer Freeport-McMoRan Richard C. Adkerson mengatakan, selama semester I/2019, Freeport Indonesia masih menggunakan kuota ekspor yang disetujui sebelumnya, yakni pada 8 Maret 2019 sebanyak 198.282 ton konsentrat untuk satu tahun. Kuota tersebut menurun drastis dari periode sebelumnya yang mencapai 1,25 juta ton.
Dia mengungkapkan, Freeport Indonesia telah meminta persetujuan dari Pemerintah Indonesia untuk meningkatkan kuota ekspor tersebut karena volume produksi yang diperkirakan Iebih tinggi dari rencana awal. Terkait produksi, Freeport Indonesia akan menjadikan produksi pada Grasberg Block Cave yang merupakan salah satu tambang bawah tanah di Grasberg sebagai kontributor terbesar pascaperalihan dari tambang terbuka.
Adapun, hingga Semester I/2019, produksi dari Grasberg Block Cave mencapai 6.200 metlik ton (MT) per hari atau naik 58,9% dan dari 3.900 MT per hari pada semester I/2018. Selain Grasberg Block Cave, blok tambang bawah tanah lainnya adalah Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ), Deep Ore Zone, dan Big Gossan dengan masing-rnasing produksi selama semester I/2019 sebanyak 7,200 MT per hari, 25,700 MT per hari, dan 5,500 MT per hari.
Menurut Adkerson, ekstraksi bijih dari tambang bawah tanah Grasberg Block Cave menghasilkan badan bijih yang sama dengan yang diproduksi dari tambang terbuka Grasberg. Produksi di tambang ini bahkan melebihi target yakni mencapai rata-rata 7.400 MT bijih per hari pada kuartal II/2019 dan diharapkan mampu meningkat menjadi 15.000 MT bijih per hari hingga akhir 2019.
Bahkan, ekspansi di tambang Grasberg Block Cave diharapkan mampu mempercepat laju produksi PTFI dari rata-rata 30.000 MT bijih per hari pada 2020 menjadi 130.000 MT bijih per hari pada 2023. Target produksi tersebut dicapai dengan perluasan Grasberg Block Cave menjadi lima blok dengan luas keseluruhan 335.000 meter persegi.
“Kami mengakses bijih sekitar 300 meter di bawah permukaan yang terbentuk dari tambang terbuka, perluasan tambang diperkirakan akan menambah produksi hingga diperkirakan akan meningkat hingga 130.000 ton per hari pada tahun 2023,” kata Adkerson.
