Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir has appointed a new director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) from Papua, Claus Wamafma.

"He is the son of Papua, who has worked for 20 years, from the bottom and proposed by the government to represent Mind ID at Freeport Indonesia," said Special Staff of the Ministry of SOEs Arya Sinulingga in Jakarta, Monday (17/2), as quoted by Antara.

He said Claus Wamafma, who graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), previously served as Senior Vice President of PT Freeport Indonesia's Social Responsibility and Community Development.

He added the inclusion of Papuan sons as directors at the company showed that Papuan human resources (HR) were also able to fill strategic positions in a company.

"The government is indeed encouraging Freeport Indonesia to recruit Papuans. But the appointment of directors is carried out in a professional manner, in accordance with the tasks they carry, "he said.

Arya explained the number of employees of PT Freeport Indonesia as many as 7,096 people. A total of 2,890 people or 40.7 percent are Papuans. Then 57.2 percent are non-Papuans, and the rest are expatriates.
