Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir has appointed Claus Wamafma, a native of Papua, as the new director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI). The appointment of the new directors was carried out at the SOE Ministry Building on 7 February.
"He is the son of Papua who has been working for 20 years, from the bottom, and the government proposed to represent Mind ID at Freeport Indonesia," said Special Staff Ministry of BUMN Arya Sinulingga in Jakarta.

Claus Wamafma is a Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) who previously served as Senior Vice President of PT Freeport Indonesia's Social Responsibility and Community Development. He added the inclusion of Papuan sons as directors at the company showed that Papuan human resources (HR) were also able to fill strategic positions in a company.

"The government is indeed encouraging Freeport Indonesia to recruit Papuans. However, the appointment of directors is carried out in a professional manner, according to the tasks they carry, "he explained.

Arya explained the number of employees of PT. Freeport Indonesia as many as 7,096 people. 2,890 people or 40.7% are Papuans, 57.2% are non-Papuans, and the rest are expatriates.

Currently, PT Freeport Indonesia's management ranks are filled by Richard C. Adkerson as President Commissioner, Orias Petrus Moedak as the vice president commissioner, also Adrianto Machribie, AM Fachir, Hinsa Siburian, and Kathleen Lynne Quirk as commissioners.

The board of directors is filled by Clayton Allen Wenas as president director, Jenpino Ngabdi as deputy President Director, also Achmad Ardianto, Claus Wamafma, Mark Jerome Johnson, and Robert Charles Schroeder as director. Indonesia currently has a 51.23% stake in PT Freeport Indonesia through PT Inalum (Persero).
Inalum controlled 26.23% directly and the rest through PT Indonesia Papua Metal and Mineral (IPMM) which is a joint venture of Inalum and BUMD owned by the Mimika Regency Government and the Provincial Government of Papua.
