Technology juggernaut Google has reportedly asked for a time extension to submit data to the Directorate General of Taxation. Jakarta tax office head Muhammad Haniv said Google had sent a letter asking for the extension after the tax office sent a request to obtain supporting data needed for an inquiry.
"lt just asked for a time extension. No reason [was given]," Haniv told. The tax office has been conducting an inquiry into Google’s tax payments, based on its operations in Indonesia. lt previously claimed Google's tax obligations could reach Rp 450 billion (US$33.6 million) per year, with a profit margin assumption of Rp 1.6 trillion to Rp 1.7 trillion per year.
The tax office based its calculations on the supposed $830 million of domestic digital advertising revenue in 2015. The same figure was published by research firm e-Marketer and the government predicts that Google and Facebook control a 70 percent market share.
However, Google only reported pretax profits of Rp 74.5 billion from 2012 to 2015, with total tax paid amounting to Rp 17.5 billion.
