Freeport-McMoRan Inc. asserted that the transition from open pit mining to underground mining to Grasberg land in Papua began. Freeport-McMoRan CEO Richard C. Adkerson said, after the results of economic analysis in the first half of 2018, PT Freeport Indonesia revised its mining plan to continue mining ore from open-pit mining to transition to the Grasberg underground mine in the first half of 2019.
He explained, substantial progress had been made to prepare for the open pit transition to the Grasberg underground. Blasting of the first stage of the undercut mine has been carried out in September 2018. Production from the area with the undercut blasting model can begin in the first half of 2019.
"All levels of underground mining and ore flow systems are underway. "The Grasberg Block Cave production rate for the next 5 years is expected to increase to 130,000 tons per day," he said in the performance report quoted on Sunday (28/10).
At present, the biggest contribution is still comes from the Grasberg open pit. Grasberg Block Cave actually started production, but the volume is still low.
He estimates Freeport Indonesia's annual capital expenditure for underground mining development projects is estimated to average US $ 0.8 billion per year (US $ 0.7 billion per year net for Freeport Indonesia) over the next 5 years.
So far, the injection of chemicals into the earth layer (hydraulic fracture) designed to manage ore production safely began in the third / 2018 quarter. The injection of chemicals is expected to have achieved the expected results of the company.
Freeport Indonesia expects the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine area to reach the full production level of 80,000 tons per day by 2022.

Perusahaan tambang asal Amerika Setikat itu memproyeksikan Freeport Indonesia akan mulai memproduksi bijih dari tambang bawah tanah Grasberg Block Cave (BCG) pada semester I/2019. Saat ini, Freeport sedang menambang tahap akhir di tambang terbuka Grasberg.
Freeport menyebut, pihaknya telah berpengalaman dalam penambangan bawah tanah dan dalam skala besar. Bahkan, tambang bawah tanah Grasberg dinilai akan menjadi proyek bawah tanah terbesar yang pernah dilakukan perusahaan.
CEO Freeport-McMoRan Richard C. Adkerson mengatakan, setelah hasil analisis ekonomi pada pertengahan tahun pertama 2018, PT Freeport Indonesia merevisi rencana penambangan untuk terus menambang bijih dari tambang terbuka hingga bertransisi ke tambang bawah tanah Grasberg pada semester I/2019.
Dia menjelaskan, kemajuan substansial telah dibuat untuk mempersiapkan transisi tambang terbuka ke bawah tanah Grasberg. Peledakan lapisan tambang bagian bawah (undercut) tahap pertama sudah dilakukan pada September 2018. Produksi dari wilayah dengan model peledakan undercut itu dapat dimulai pada semester I/2019.
“Semua tingkat penambangan bawah tanah dan sistem aliran bijih sedang dilakukan. Tingkat produksi bijih [Grasberg Block Cave] selama 5 tahun ke depan diperkirakan akan meningkat hingga 130.000 ton per hari,” katanya dalam laporan kinerja yang dikutip Minggu (28/10).
Saat ini, kontribusi terbesar masih berasal dari tambang terbuka Grasberg. Grasberg Block Cave sebenarnya sudah mulai berproduksi, tetapi volumenya masih rendah.
Dia mengestimasikan belanja modal tahunan Freeport Indonesia untuk proyek-proyek pembangunan tambang bawah tanah diperkirakan rata-rata US$ 0,8 miliar per tahun (US$0,7 miliar per tahun bersih untuk Freeport Indonesia) selama 5 tahun ke depan.
Sejauh ini, kegiatan penyuntikan bahan kimia ke dalam lapisan bumi (rekah hidrolik) yang dirancang untuk mengelola produksi bijih dengan aman dimulai pada kuartal III/2018. Penyuntikan cairan kimia itu diharapkan sudah mencapai hasil yang diharapkan perusahaan.
Freeport Indonesia mengharapkan agar Wilayah tambang Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) untuk mencapai tingkat produksi penuh 80.000 ton per hari pada 2022.
